by Steven J. Zaloga

'Armour at War Series' No 7038

72 pages, 189 b/w photos, 16 color plates

The title says 1941-1945 yet the coverage of Light Tanks in the book starts from 1937, not that it's a problem.

The main vehicles covered are the M3 and M5 family of vehicles with the odd cameo from the M1 Combat Car, M2A2 and M24.

Starting with the usual indepth text introduction from Steven Zaloga giving a history of light tank use from the early years through to the end of the war the book is then devided into periods and campaigns with the photo coverage made up entirely of training and wartime 'in-action' type shots.

Starting the the period 1937-1941 it covers the use of M1s, M2A2s and M3s in the training role.

We then move on to North Africa 1941-43 and features the M3/M3A1 in British and US service.

Following this is the Pacific Campaign 1941-43 and features the M2A4 and M3/M3A1 vehicles and the Italian campaign of 1943-45 with coverage of the M5/M5A1, M3A3, M8 HMC and a few shots of M24s.

A brief section covering the use of M3/M3A1 vehicles in Russian use is followed by the second part of the Pacific campaign 1944-45 which features the M3A1, M5A1 and M8 vehicles.

Lastly there is the European Theater of Operations (ETO) 1944-45 and has photos of the M3A3, M5A1 (with a few interior shots), M8 HMC and M24 (only a few photos).

There is also a center section of 8 pages with colour profile drawings of various vehicles and cam schemes used.

In all I have seen a great many of the photos in previous publications, but with this book they are all in one place. A good overall reference for the US Light Tanks of WWII.
