Nebelkraftwagen Sd.Kfz.11/4
AFV Club Kit No. AF 35051
1:35th Scale
Review by Terry Ashley

AFV Club
The Vehicle:
The Sd.Kfz.11/4 was a modified version of the basic 11/1 3 ton and was used to tow 10cm mortars and later to carry 15cm and 21cm Nebelwerfer rockets, the vehicle was also used to tow the NbW 41 and NbW 42 rocket launchers. Basically identical with the 11/1 except for the rear storage compartments being enlarged to allow room for the rockets. The width of the rear section was also increased to allow the storage of longer rockets.

The Kit:
AFV ClubThe kit is the third in the Sd.Kfz.11 series from AFV Club and retains sprues A, B, C and D from the first 3ton kit (AF35040) and has new sprues K, L and M with the parts for the Nebelkraftwagen. Consisting of 255 parts plus a small etched fret for the fenders and hood logo plus the track from the first kit and a small decal sheet.

The chassis, suspension, tracks and front cab and engine compartment are the same as the as the first kit (see the 3ton review for a build up of the chassis) while the new rear section has new floor section, seats and wider side panels which feature internal detail for the rocket racks. The doors are separate parts with internal detail and can be fitted either open or closed, an extra wheel is included for the spare stored on the compartment room. Two extra sprues contain the end sections of the nebewerfer rockets to add to the racks as desired.

The tracks are also the same as the earlier kit and while nice for 'rubber band' type tracks the use of the AFV Club individual track links for the 251 (Kit No.35044) will help greatly with the final appearance.

decals
Yes, there are white fender markings on the sheet

Decals:
Markings are provided for 2 vehicles, one in basic Dark Yellow and Red Brown cam scheme and the other in overall German Gray, both from unknown units on the Russian front.

Conclusion:
Another very nice kit from AFV Club to add to the variants of the 3ton. The lack of pin ejector marks in noticeable places is again noteworthy and adds to the overall nice finish of the kit and the depiction of the wider rear compartments makes this noticeably different from the earlier 3 ton.

References:
While there hasn't been many dedicated books on the Sd.Kfz.11 it has made many cameo appearances in various books on German equipment and campaigns during WWII.
Some of these are the numerous Concord books such as #7021 "Deutsches Afrikakorps", #7024 "Wehrmacht Support Vehicles" and #7025 "4.Panzer-Division on the Eastern Front (1) 1941-1943"

Those that I am aware of that deal directly or in part with the Sd.Kfz.11 are:
