ATAK Model
Panther G Zimmerit
ATAK 1:35 set #35006
Review by Terry Ashley

The Set:

TamiyaATAK Model has released a number of resin Zimmerit sets for 1:35 German AFVs with this example being designed for the Tamiya Panther G early version (kit #35170).

The set contains two sheets of very thin resin zimmerit with fourteen sections for various parts of the vehicle with cut-outs to fit around the raised details such as the suspension components plus another seven solid light cream resin parts with zimmerit coating to replace the corresponding kit part.

The thin resin zimmerit has sections for the lower and upper hull sides, glacis and lower hull front plate plus the turret walls and sides of the gun mount with the solid resin replacement parts for the rear hull plate, storage boxes and exhausts plus the gun mantlet and glacis MG cover. The solid resin parts have the usual casting block to be removed which is quite an easy task with no other cleanup needed.

The zimmerit detail is a very good representation of the style seen on these Panthers while the solid resin parts have similar zimmerit coating and are nicely detailed with the exhaust pipes for example hollowed out back to the curve in the pipe for good definition.

Fitting the resin zimmerit will take some care as you first need the lightly sand the backing resin from the parts and this is best done by putting the resin film face down on a flat surface and lightly sand with fine wet and dry taking care not to damage the zimmerit. Care will also be needed when handling the segments of zimmerit as they can come apart when the backing resin is reduced but if this happens it’s easy to fit them together again as they are applied to the model. It is also very easy to add battle damage by cutting out sections of the zimmerit as you see fit for some more variety.

The solid resin parts simply replace the kit parts and should be added after the thin zimmerit sheets have been glued in place using suitable glue such as metal foil adhesive, white glue, epoxy to allow some movement with cyanoacrylate used to firmly glue the edges.

Conclusion:

This and other ATAK Model zimmerit sheets are nicely detailed with the thin zimmerit segments plus additional parts to replace some kit items making the job easier and overall make adding zimmerit to German AFVs quite easy.

Highly recommended
