Horch "Sanka" Ambulance
Das Werk Miniatures 1:35 conversion set #DWM35200
Review by Terry Ashley

Tamiya
Das Werks Miniatures have released this update set for the Tamiya Kit of the Horch 4x4 Type 1A (#35052) to produce the “Sanka” Ambulance version used widely by German forces during WWII.

The set consists of 29 parts cast in light cream resin to a very high standard without any blemishes present and just the usual casting blocks and resin film inside the window openings to be removed before use.

The larger parts are the side panels, roof and rear panel with the notable thing being the complete absence of any warping with the perfectly cast panels making the assembly of the body shell very straightforward.

As well as the outer body panels there is the interior engine firewall with windscreen and the bulkhead behind the front driver’s compartment plus replacement headlights and NOTEK light with mounting brackets and separate door handles and windscreen wipers which are cast very fine and will need care in handling.

Also included is a set of replacement wheels with a different tread pattern than on the kit wheels and the hub detail is more refined than on the kit wheels with better defined rim bolts.

Assembly is very straightforward after cleanup with no alterations required on the Tamiya kit which makes the conversion even easier.

The side panels have a lip along the inside bottom edge that fits neatly over the lower kit chassis and the two remnants of the casting blocks at the top of each panel should be left there as they locate into indentations on the roof casting assisting with the precise fitting. The rear panel and windscreen fit nicely between the side panels and the roof is also a good fit making for a trouble free assembly.

On the inside of the open windows is an indentation that allows you to add thin clear sheet for the windows if you wish but this is not included in the set but should be easy to source elsewhere.

The wheels fit straight onto the kit axle stubs without alteration adding to the simplicity of the conversion and offer a nice alternative to the standard tread pattern included in most kits.

No instructions are included with the set but the box top photo and another of the assembled kit included should be more than enough for anyone who would tackle this conversion in the first place as the parts placement is self explanatory.

There are also no markings included but again these should be easy enough to find from your spares or the many generic German markings decals sheets available.

Conclusion:
This is a simple conversion not requiring any alterations to the target kit with superb blemish free resin castings and good fit of the parts to build a very different looking vehicle from the basic kit.

You will have to add stretchers and other equipment inside and supply the markings to finish off but other than that it’s pretty plain sailing.

If you want to add even more detail there is also the Plus Models Engine Set (#201) that kits to the front of the Tamiya kit.

Highly recommended
