Voyager Model 1:35 Set # PEA141
Review by Terry Ashley

CyberhobbyDragon
Introduction:

This is the second of the three sets released by Voyager Models for the Cyberhobby/Dragon Sd.Kfz.250/1 Neu (kit #6427) and compliments the ‘Basic’ set for the same kit (set #PE35241).

The three sets released are:
PE35241 WWII German Sd.Kfz.250/1 NEU Basic
PEA141 WWII German Sd.Kfz.250/1 NEU Stowage bins & Fenders (This Set)
PEA142 WWII German Sd.Kfz.250/1 NEU Armor plate

This Set:

The set consists of 2 frets of etched brass in different thicknesses, 1 part in light cream resin for the exhaust muffler, 2 formed brass fender width indicators and 4 lengths of thin steel wire for the storage box hinges.

Quality of the etching and the resin casting is first class without any blemishes or distortions anywhere with just the usual attachment burs to be filed from the etched parts and a small residue of the casting block to be cleaned from the resin part before use.

The etched parts have the usual engraved bending lines to aid in this process but a good quality etched bending tool will always come in handy.

There is only one interior part and that is the tread plate floor for the rear compartment which requires you to shave off the kit tread plate from the rear kit floor (part A39) before adding the etched tread plate that has finer texturing than that on the kit part.

The remainder of the set is for the fender and side storage boxes and these simply replace the kit parts without the need for any kit alterations.

Each side fender is in two large sections that is easily bent to shape as there are no rounded curves to worry about but you will have to be careful in the bending sequences especially for the front sections to make the job easier.

The storage boxes are large parts with separate doors as well as inner door frames which again are all square bends and shouldn’t pose any real problems.

The two separate box doors on each side have hinges that can be made workable using the steel wire provided and have separate inserts for the opening handles with fine etched chain and padlocks to finish off.

On the left side is the resin muffler that replaces the kit parts and this has separate etched mounting brackets that fit between the front and rear fender sections and providing care is taken there shouldn’t be any problems during assembly.

For the right side there is the large storage box between the front and rear fender sections and this is entirely in brass that needs careful bending due to the curves at each top corner.
There are separate shelves inside the storage box and the door hinges can be made workable as can be the top latch allowing you to open and close the door if careful during assembly.

Also included in the set is a selection of small tools such as spanners, wrenches, fret saw and metal file to add inside this or any of the storage boxes should you want to show the doors open?

Included for the front fenders are two formed brass width indicators with separate etched mounting discs but the bend in the indicators is half way up the stalk and this should actually be bent at the base of the stalk as shown in the instruction illustrations.

Not sure if Voyager simply included the wrong width indicators in the set as they do make various types but this is not the first update set from them with the wrong style width indicator included and a little more quality control may be needed on this point.

Instructions:
These are 3 A5 sized pages with the usual exploded view drawings of the assembly sequences and I found these easy to follow in most cases.

As usual you should study the instructions carefully before assembly to avoid any traps and overall the instruction trips seemed to take up less space on the desk than the older style full page instructions leaving plenty of room to work.

Conclusion:

This is another well produced set to add further detail to the Cyberhobby/Dragon Sd.Kfz.250/1 by replacing the fenders and storage for greater detail definition, it will also allow you to show the storage boxes open in you wish using the working hinges.

While the sets looks fairly simply there is a bit of intricate assembly needed the working hinges and storage boxes but the overall effect is worth the effort.

Highly recommended
