120mm
RH120 L55 Barrel
#MP 3559-2
Review by Terry Ashley
This replacement barrel is designed for the Tamiya Leopard 2A5 (Kit No.35242)
to bring it to 2A6 standard but can just as easily be used as a replacement barrel
for the Leopard
2A6 (Kit No.35271).
The barrel consists of three aluminium parts, one brass part and one resin
part in light cream resin. The quality of the metal parts is of a high standard
and the fit is to precise tolerances, while the resin fume extractor which
is hollow only requires the removal of the casting block on one end with
a fine
razor
saw and all is
ready for
assembly.
Unassembled parts
Assembly is straight forward, just slip the fume extractor over the barrel and
glue in place against the raised collar, there is some slight movement between
the
fume extractor and barrel so ensure it is evenly located before the glue dries.
(I use thick slow curing cyanoacrylate for this as it allows time to make minor
adjustments before hardening). Leave the breech end locating shaft separate at
this
stage.
There is some minor surgery required on the Tamiya kit parts to accept
the new metal parts but nothing very taxing. Firstly with a fine razor saw cut
the end
section off the kit
barrel and glue this into Tamiya breech part C11.
The metal locating shaft then fits into part C11 level with the small raised
rib half way along the thicker section. The thin neck fits precisely into part
C11 but there was some slight movement at the larger opening and to remedy this
I ran a length of masking tape around the shaft and then glued in place again
with slow curing cyanoacrylate. The shaft is inserted level with the small raised
rib leaving the end section of the shaft exposed to accept the assembled barrel.
The barrel can be left off to make the rest of the kit assembly easier and attached
at any stage, the only other adjustment required is to carefully remove the
muzzle tip barrel reference system reflector from Tamiya part B55 and
add this
to
the
brass
muzzle
part
which has a small flat surface to accept this.
In all a very detailed and easy to assemble barrel to add that bit extra to either
of the Tamiya Leopard kits.
Recommended.
